Everything You Need to Know About the ISDN Switch Off

The UK’s phone network is undergoing a significant change, as legacy systems are beginning to be phased out. In the past, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), the circuit-switched telephone network, has transmitted voice, data, video and other network services via the copper wire-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) circuits. By 2025, all PSTN circuits will be switched off.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the ISDN Switch Off to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the changes, well in advance.

What is the ISDN Switch Off?

The ISDN Switch Off refers to the process of shutting down the legacy PSTN and ISDN networks. The process began in 2020 and will continue over the coming years, with both networks being fully switched off in 2025. Any existing hardware and infrastructure that relies on this technology will no longer be functional from that point onwards. The ISDN Switch Off will affect both home and business phone lines, so it’s important to be prepared for what’s to come.

Why is the ISDN Switch Off Happening?

ISDN is being switched off as it’s now too outdated to keep pace with the demanding requirements of modern business communication. ISDN was introduced in the 1980s and, while revolutionary at the time, the network hasn’t undergone any significant changes since. In today’s increasingly fast-paced and digitised environment, neither ISDN nor PSTN technologies can deliver the necessary volume or quality of data required. ISDN lines offer very little flexibility, as businesses are tied to a single physical location. As remote and hybrid working models grow in popularity, this is no longer suitable. Broadband internet connections now work a lot more efficiently and at a higher level than ISDN, making them a far more appropriate option.

What Will Replace ISDN?

ISDN will be replaced by digital phone lines that use Internet Protocol (IP) technology to route calls. IP lines transmit data via the internet, which is far more efficient, accessible and convenient for most businesses. As a result of this change, traditional, legacy telephone systems must now be updated to hosted VoIP phone systems. You can either keep your current physical phone system and use a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunk that allows you to make calls using a data connection or shift to a fully hosted Cloud system and benefit from the freedom and flexibility of VoIP.

What Are the Key ISDN Switch Off Dates?

The ISDN switch off is already in motion. However, in September 2023, organisations will no longer be able to sell any copper-related products that are due to be affected by the switch off. Many areas have already stopped selling these products, but September marks the absolute end of ISDN-related sales. As you could lose support and maintenance of existing copper lines after this, we recommend that you make alternative arrangements as soon as possible. Then, in December 2025, the national grid of both ISDN and PSTN lines will be switched off completely.

What Does Your Business Need to Do Before the ISDN Switch Off?

Before the ISDN switch off, you need to decide whether you would like to move to VoIP or a SIP trunk. You also need to assess whether your existing phone system is IP compatible. If it’s not, you need to look into investing in a new model that’s IP compatible.
